Product & Process
What is Aceite de Achiote? It is a traditional Puerto Rican culinary oil infused with annatto seeds (bija). It provides a vibrant golden-orange color and a mild, earthy, peppery aroma to dishes. It is the secret ingredient behind authentic Arroz con Gandules and Pasteles.
How is your oil made? Our oil is handcrafted in small batches right here in Chicago. We slow-infuse high-quality organic avocado oil with whole annatto seeds at precise temperatures to ensure maximum color and flavor extraction without scorching the seeds, which can cause bitterness.
What are the ingredients? We believe in "clean" flavor. Our oil contains only two ingredients:
- Premium Organic Avocado Oil
- Hand-selected Annatto Seeds
No MSG, no artificial dyes, and no preservatives—unlike the store-bought packets.
Is it spicy? No. While it looks like a chili oil, achiote is not "hot." It is used for its rich color and subtle, nutty depth. It is kid-friendly and safe for those who avoid spicy foods.
Ordering & Pre-Orders
Why is this a pre-order? To ensure you receive the freshest product possible, we wait to batch and bottle our oil until the pre-order window closes. This ensures the oil hasn't been sitting on a shelf for months, preserving its natural antioxidants and aroma.
When will I receive my order? All pre-orders placed this week will be batched and bottled over the next 10 days. Deliveries will be dropped off at your door in approximately 2 weeks. You will receive a notification when your bottle is en route!
Delivery & Local Pickup
Where do you deliver? Currently, we offer drop-off delivery to most Chicago neighborhoods (and select surrounding suburbs). Enter your zip code at checkout to see if you are in our delivery zone.
How does "Drop-off Delivery" work? Once your oil is ready, we will text/email you with a delivery window. We will leave your bottle safely at your doorstep or with your building's concierge. No signature is required.
Usage & Storage
How should I store my oil? Store your bottle in a cool, dark place (like a pantry). Keep it away from direct sunlight, as UV rays can fade the beautiful natural pigment over time.
Does it need to be refrigerated? No, refrigeration is not necessary, but it won't hurt the product. If refrigerated, the oil may become cloudy or thicken; simply let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes to clear up.
How long does it last? For the best flavor and color, we recommend using your oil within 6 months of the "bottled on" date.
Sustainability
Can I return my glass bottle? Yes! We love a circular economy. If you order from us again, you can leave your empty, rinsed glass bottle at your door during the next drop-off, and we will give you a discount code for your next purchase!
